OpenAI shipped a major update to its Codex Mac desktop app on April 16, adding computer use (Codex can now operate other Mac apps with its own cursor in parallel with the user), persistent memory for workflows and tech stacks, an in-app browser for reviewing local and public pages, image generation via gpt-image-1.5, and over 90 new plugins combining app integrations and MCP servers (9to5Mac). The update also enables Codex to schedule and resume multi-day tasks across conversation threads. Computer use is not yet available in the EU or UK (The Tech Portal). The changes directly target Anthropic's Claude Code, which has a similar agentic coding and desktop-control focus.
