Uber commits $10B to autonomous vehicle fleets and equity stakes, abandoning asset-light model

The Financial Times calculated that Uber has committed over $10 billion to autonomous vehicles — more than $2.5 billion in equity stakes across companies including WeRide, Lucid, Nuro, Rivian, and Wayve, plus $7.5 billion earmarked for procuring robotaxi fleets — a sharp reversal from the asset-light gig model the company has operated on since its founding. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told investors in February that Uber expects robotaxis running in 15 cities by end of 2026 and aims to carry "the largest share of AV trips globally by 2029." The shift mirrors pressure from Waymo's expansion and Tesla's robotaxi rollouts, and marks one of the largest capital pivots in Uber's history.
