A GitHub data policy update that took effect April 24, 2026, allows GitHub to use prompts, outputs, code snippets, filenames, and repository structure from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users to train AI models unless users actively opt out in settings at /settings/copilot/features. Copilot Business and Enterprise users are excluded, and users who had already opted out of product-improvement data collection retain that preference. The data may be shared with GitHub's corporate affiliates including Microsoft but not with third-party AI model providers.
