On April 20, GitHub paused new subscriptions for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans, citing a fundamental mismatch between flat-rate pricing and the compute demands of agentic workflows. GitHub stated that individual sessions "regularly consume far more resources" than a month's subscription covers, with weekly compute costs roughly doubling since January 2026. The announcement also removes Opus 4.5 and 4.6 from Pro+ plans and all Opus models from Pro plans, with Opus 4.7 now exclusive to Pro+. Existing subscribers may cancel for a full refund through May 20; Microsoft is transitioning the product toward token-based billing.
