At the 2026 World IT Show in Seoul on April 28, Kakao Mobility VP Kim Jin-kyu laid out the company's in-house Level 4 autonomous driving strategy built on ML perception/control models, redundant vehicle hardware, and vision-language anomaly detection. The company's Gangnam late-night robotaxi completed 7,754 rides from September 2024 through February 2026 with zero accidents attributable to autonomous technology before transitioning from free pilot to paid commercial service in April 2026; Seoul has since expanded the fleet from three to seven vehicles. Kakao also announced plans to open-source large-scale AV datasets, HD maps, and platform APIs as part of an ecosystem-wide initiative.
